Laser Scanning Benefits Structural Steel Design.
A mechanical engineering firm had a commission to design and manufacture structural steel foundations for a hospital extension. The hospital had unused areas between exiting driveways and existing floors and wanted to make better use of the overhead area for new facilities. The job requires structural steel beams to be installed between exiting concrete walls and columns to support a new floor. The engineer needed to accurately measure the existing concrete faces, including curves, where the steel was to be attached. Rather than risk manual measurement errors and flow on errors in the design, manufacture and installation of the steel work, he called on Scan Hub to create a laser point cloud so he could do horizontal and vertical 2D sections for drafting the new steel work. Our work resulted in measurement accuracy of +/- 1.5 mm and the 2D sections enabled him to design for the curved walls in this area.
