When CBH Group in WA approached Scan Hub to help with a new loader bucket design for grain handling, we knew what we had to do.
This 21 ton Volvo L120 loader has standard bucket options which were not optimal for CBH’s needs. CBH manage the storage and shipment of grain at most of their facilities in WA and grain acts like a liquid and is relatively light weight compared with soil or rock. CBH wanted to design a new bucket to handle larger cubic meter volumes but had to follow some constraints such as width for movement in tight spaces and visual line of sight for the driver/operator to operate safely.
Ultimately they would need to model the new bucket in 3D and produce shop drawings for the fabricator. As no CAD drawings were available from the manufacturer, CBH needed to model the lifting arm from scratch. Manual measurement would be costly and prone to errors. To tackle this job, Scan Hub chose to deploy a Faro Focus laser terrestrial scanner to produce a 3D point cloud from around 25 scan positions.
Once the point cloud was registered and indexed, 3D modelling could commence. Multiple sections of areas of interest, mostly the lifting arm, would be used to aid the CAD modelling. The aim of the modelling was to allow various bucket design concepts to be visualized on the lifting arm in various positions.
The final concept chosen would then be sent to the fabricator, with confidence that the analysis and design was optimal and accurate.
