Downer is a partner in the Logan Water Infrastructure Alliance (LWIA) which provides water and wastewater infrastructure services in Logan City Qld. Over the past six years, Logan Water Alliance has provided almost $300 million of planning, design, construction and program management services for Logan City, one of south east Queensland’s fastest growing areas. The work has included laying 85 kilometers of pipelines, building or upgrading 20 pump stations, upgrading four wastewater treatment plants and constructing two water reservoirs.
Scan Hub was approached by LWIA to provide 3D laser scanning services for one of the 30+ year old pump stations that needed upgrading. We scanned the internal and external areas including hard to get at pipe manifolds in trenches inside the building. As part of the CAD re-design process, LWIA needed the precise positions of the manifolds and flanges that connect to internal pipes, valves and pumps. Manual measurement and survey would have been costly and prone to measurement error. The 3D point cloud produced by the laser scanning process provided 350+ million points with average accuracy of +/- 2mm or better. The point cloud was also geo referenced by survey markers, so it can be overlaid in existing or new CAD drawings for deviation analysis.
Scan Hub also provided 3D CAD modelling of the manifolds, flanges and other building infrastructure components.
Most surveyors, engineers and fabricators know that they can’t rely on original documentation, so site survey prior to re-design is necessary. Laser scanning significantly reduced the cost of the site survey work.
